Ehud

Old Testament

Ehud, a Benjamite, was one of the sons of Bilhan.

Ehud was the second judge of Israel, a left-handed Benjaminite who delivered Israel from eighteen years of Moabite domination under King Eglon. He crafted a double-edged dagger, concealed it on his right thigh, and secured a private audience with the obese king on the pretext of a secret message, then plunged the blade so deeply into Eglon's belly that 'the handle also went in after the blade' (Judges 3:15–22). Escaping while the servants assumed the king was relieving himself, Ehud rallied Israel and killed about ten thousand Moabites at the fords of the Jordan. The land then had rest for eighty years (Judges 3:30). His story is notable for its dark humor and the emphasis on God working through unconventional means.
