Esarhaddon

Divided Kingdom Assyria · H0634
Old Testament

Esarhaddon was the king of Assyria, the son and successor of Sennacherib.

Esarhaddon was king of Assyria from approximately 681 to 669 BC, succeeding his father Sennacherib after the latter's assassination (2 Kings 19:37; Isaiah 37:38). He is notable in biblical history for repopulating Samaria with foreign colonists after the deportation of the northern Israelites, a policy referenced in Ezra 4:2. Extrabiblical records confirm him as one of Assyria's most capable rulers, who reconquered Egypt and conducted major building projects, including the restoration of Babylon, which his father had destroyed.
