Hammath

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Judah(?) · H2575B
Old Testament

Hammath was a Kenite clan, listed among the descendants of Salma, the father (ie founder) of Bethlehem.

Hammath was a man of the tribe of Judah from the clan of the Kenites, recorded in 1 Chronicles 2:55 as the father of the house of Rechab—the community celebrated in Jeremiah 35 for their strict adherence to their ancestor Jonadab's commands. He is listed as the ancestor of the scribal guilds associated with Jabez, along with Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. The connection between Hammath and the Rechabite tradition places him at the origin of one of the most distinctive lay communities in ancient Israel.
