Jehoshaphat

Old Testament

Jehoshaphat was the son of Asa and became a powerful and righteous king of Judah.

Jehoshaphat was the fourth king of Judah, reigning around 870–848 BC, and is remembered as one of the most godly rulers in the southern kingdom. He instituted a nationwide program of religious education, sending officials and Levites throughout Judah to teach from the Book of the Law (2 Chronicles 17:7–9). When a vast coalition of Moabites and Ammonites invaded, he called a national fast and led worship, and the enemy forces inexplicably destroyed one another (2 Chronicles 20). He established a judicial system throughout the land and charged judges to act with integrity because they were judging for God rather than man (2 Chronicles 19:5–7). His reign was marred by an ill-advised alliance with the wicked northern king Ahab, whose daughter Athaliah he allowed his son Jehoram to marry.
