Old Testament

Joel, the brother of Nathan, was one of the mighty men who fought valiantly for King David.

Joel was a prophet of Judah whose book, while undated, uses a devastating locust plague as a theological lens for understanding divine judgment and the coming 'Day of the LORD.' His name means 'The LORD is God.' The first two chapters describe the locust invasion in extraordinary detail, calling the people to corporate lamentation and repentance (Joel 1:13–14; 2:12–17). God responds with a promise of material and spiritual restoration. Most significantly, Joel 2:28–32 promises that God will pour out his Spirit on all flesh—sons, daughters, servants, old, and young—a passage quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost as fulfilled in the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:17–21). Joel's vision of cosmic signs and the valley of decision (Joel 3) is widely cited in New Testament eschatological contexts.
