Potiphera

Old Testament

Potiphera, the priest of On (Heliopolis), whose daughter Asenath was given to Joseph as a wife by Pharaoh.

Potiphera was the priest of On (Heliopolis), the great sun-worship center of ancient Egypt, whose daughter Asenath was given to Joseph as a wife by Pharaoh as a mark of honor following Joseph's elevation to second in the kingdom (Genesis 41:45, 50; 46:20). This marriage integrated Joseph into the Egyptian priestly aristocracy and produced two sons— Manasseh and Ephraim—who were adopted by Jacob and became two of the twelve tribes of Israel. Potiphera should not be confused with Potiphar, the military officer whose wife falsely accused Joseph.
