New Testament

Simeon, also called Niger, was a prophet and teacher in the church at Antioch who was involved in sending Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey.

Simeon was the second son of Jacob and Leah. Together with his brother Levi, he took violent revenge on the city of Shechem after Shechem son of Hamor raped their sister Dinah, killing all the males and plundering the city while the men were incapacitated from circumcision (Genesis 34). Jacob rebuked both brothers for bringing trouble on the family, and his deathbed blessing pronounced their dispersal in Israel as a consequence (Genesis 49:5–7). In Egypt, Joseph kept Simeon as a hostage while his brothers returned to Canaan for Benjamin (Genesis 42:24). The tribe of Simeon was eventually absorbed into the territory of Judah and effectively disappeared as a distinct entity in Israelite history, fulfilling the prediction of dispersion.
