Study Note

The enumeration of the Spirit's gifts upon the messianic shoot from Jesse's stump — wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the LORD — represents an ideal of Spirit-endowed leadership surpassing any historical Israelite king. The verse draws on the royal endowment tradition (compare 1 Samuel 16:13) but extends it to a future figure who will combine charismatic, governmental, and pious qualities in full. Christian interpretation from the second century onward read these six gifts as predictive of Christ's anointing, and Western theology developed them into the 'seven gifts of the Holy Spirit' (adding piety from the Septuagint's doubling of 'fear of the LORD'). The passage inaugurates Isaiah's most developed portrait of eschatological renewal (11:1-16), grounding future hope in the restoration of the Davidic line.
