Study Note

Study Note

The promise that the sun and moon will never set again because 'the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended' expresses the eschatological abolition of natural limits on divine radiance. The verse is the fulfillment of the promise begun in 60:1 ('arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you'), creating a frame around the entire chapter's vision of restored Zion. Revelation 21:23 and 22:5 explicitly draw on this passage in describing the new Jerusalem where 'the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.' The abolition of mourning (days of mourning ended) anticipates Revelation 21:4's 'no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.'
