Study Note

Study Note

This climactic verse concludes one of Isaiah's great messianic throne-poems, promising an everlasting Davidic kingdom established on justice and righteousness. The phrase 'increase of his government' suggests perpetual expansion with no terminus, contrasting sharply with the Assyrian empire dominating Isaiah's political horizon. The covenant formula 'zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this' transfers the guarantee from human political calculation to divine sovereign will. Luke 1:32-33 applies this promise directly to Jesus, and Handel's Messiah has made the verse one of the most recognizable prophecies in Christian liturgical tradition.
