Study Note

'Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.' Following Hosea's parabolic purchase of Gomer (representing God's re-purchase of unfaithful Israel), this verse promises an eschatological return: Israel will seek both God and 'David their king' — anticipating a renewed Davidic covenant. Romans 11:26 ('all Israel shall be saved') and Paul's entire argument in Romans 9-11 about Israel's future operate within this promise-structure. The phrase 'in the latter days' (be'acharit ha-yamim) is a standard eschatological marker in the Hebrew prophets, situating this promise at the horizon of history.
