Matthew 3:10
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Study Note
'Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire' — John the Baptist's eschatological warning of imminent judgment employs the tree-and-fruit metaphor that Jesus will extensively develop (Matthew 7:17–19; 12:33; John 15:2–6). The 'even now' (ēdē de) places the judgment not in the remote future but as already in process — the axe is already at the root — creating the urgency that drives John's call to repentance. The warning is specifically addressed to Pharisees and Sadducees who approach John for baptism (verse 7), challenging the assumption that ethnic descent from Abraham provides eschatological security (verse 9). The fire imagery anticipates the 'unquenchable fire' of verse 12 and connects to the broader prophetic tradition of divine judgment as refining (Malachi 3:2; Isaiah 4:4) and consuming fire (Amos 1–2; Zephaniah 1:18).
