Abihu

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Levi · H0030
Old Testament

Abihu was a son of Aaron who served as a priest. (Exo.6.23)

Abihu was the second son of Aaron and Elisheba, consecrated alongside his father and brothers as one of the first priests of Israel (Exodus 6:23; 28:1). He accompanied Moses, Aaron, Nadab, and seventy elders up Mount Sinai where they 'saw the God of Israel' and ate and drank in his presence (Exodus 24:9–11). His priesthood came to an abrupt end when he and his brother Nadab offered 'unauthorized fire' before the LORD, an act for which they were immediately struck dead (Leviticus 10:1–3). Their deaths at the outset of Israel's cultic life established the absolute holiness demanded of those who minister before God.
