The first man, created by God
Adam is presented in Genesis as the first human being, formed by God from the dust of the ground and animated by the divine breath of life (Genesis 2:7). He was placed in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and guard it, and was given Eve as his companion. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit, they were expelled from Eden, introducing sin and death into human experience (Genesis 3). In the New Testament, Paul contrasts Adam—the first man through whom sin entered the world—with Christ, the 'last Adam,' whose obedience brings justification and life (Romans 5:12–21; 1 Corinthians 15:45).
