Amariah was a Levite, a descendant of Hebron, who served during the reign of King David.
Amariah was a Levite from the clan of Hebron, son of Hebron and great-grandson of Levi, who served during the reign of King David (1 Chronicles 23:19; 24:23). The Hebronites were assigned special administrative and judicial responsibilities west of the Jordan (1 Chronicles 26:30–32). Several other men named Amariah appear in the Old Testament—including a high priest in the line of Zadok (1 Chronicles 6:7, 52) and an official appointed by Jehoshaphat for judicial matters (2 Chronicles 19:11)—reflecting the name's popularity in priestly and Levitical families. The name means 'Yahweh has spoken' or 'Yahweh has promised.'
