Aramitess

Exodus & Wilderness Syria · H0761G
Old Testament

An Aramitess, who was a concubine of Manasseh, gave birth to Machir and Asriel..

The Aramitess (Aramean woman) was a concubine of the patriarch Manasseh, the elder son of Joseph, who bore him Machir and Asriel (1 Chronicles 7:14). Her unnamed status as a concubine and her Aramean origin suggest that the Manassite tribe had connections with the Aramean peoples of northern Syria and Mesopotamia during the patriarchal period. Her son Machir became particularly prominent—his descendants settled the Transjordanian region of Gilead and gave it their name (Numbers 32:39–40; Deuteronomy 3:15). The limited biblical record names her only by ethnicity, not by personal name.
