Eleazar

Old Testament

Eleazar, son of Mahli, had no sons, only daughters.

Eleazar was the third son of Aaron and succeeded his father as Israel's high priest after Aaron's death on Mount Hor (Numbers 20:25–28). He supervised the consecration of Joshua as Moses's successor (Numbers 27:18–23) and assisted in the division of Canaan among the tribes (Joshua 14:1; 19:51). He oversaw the handling of sacred materials after the deaths of Nadab and Abihu, Aaron's older sons, and preserved the censers of Korah's company as a warning (Numbers 16:36–40). His son Phinehas inherited the priestly line, and through Zadok the high priesthood passed to the Aaronide-Eleazar line in Solomon's time. Eleazar is listed as an ancestor of Ezra the scribe (Ezra 7:5) and appears in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:15, though this is a different Eleazar).
