father of Timothy

New Testament

Timothy's father was a Greek man, and his mother was a believing Jewish woman named Eunice.

The father of Timothy, the young associate of Paul, is described in Acts 16:1 only as 'a Greek,' indicating he was a Gentile man who had married a Jewish woman named Eunice in the city of Lystra. His Greek identity meant Timothy had not been circumcised, which Paul remedied before taking Timothy along on his missionary journey to avoid offense among the Jewish communities they would visit (Acts 16:3). 2 Timothy 1:5 praises the sincere faith that dwelt in Eunice and Timothy's grandmother Lois, without mentioning his father's faith.
