Ish-bosheth
Ish-bosheth (also called Eshbaal), Saul's son, was made king over Israel by Abner but was ultimately assassinated, leading to David's rule over all Israel.
Ish-bosheth, whose original name was likely Eshbaal ('man of Baal'), was the son of King Saul who was installed as king over Israel by the military commander Abner after Saul's death at Jezreel (2 Samuel 2:8–10). His reign over the northern tribes was contested by David, who ruled Judah from Hebron, and a prolonged conflict ensued. After Abner defected to David, Ish-bosheth's authority collapsed; he was assassinated in his bed by two of his own military officers, Baanah and Rechab (2 Samuel 4:5–7). David condemned the assassination as wicked, executing the killers, and Ish-bosheth's death led to the elders of Israel anointing David as king over all Israel.
