Old Testament

Kareah was the father of Johanan and Jonathan, two military leaders who joined Gedaliah after the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians.

Kareah was the father of Johanan and Jonathan, two military officers who survived the fall of Jerusalem and joined Gedaliah, the Babylonian-appointed governor, at Mizpah (2 Kings 25:23; Jeremiah 40:8). After Gedaliah was assassinated, Johanan son of Kareah led the remaining population to consult Jeremiah and ultimately fled to Egypt against prophetic counsel (Jeremiah 41–43). Kareah himself plays no active role; he is known exclusively through the prominence of his sons in the turbulent years after Jerusalem's destruction.
