New Testament

Philip, one of the seven deacons chosen by the early church in Jerusalem, who preached the gospel in Samaria and baptized an Ethiopian eunuch.

Philip was one of the Twelve Apostles, from Bethsaida in Galilee like Peter and Andrew (John 1:44). He appears in several significant Johannine passages: he found Nathanael and brought him to Jesus (John 1:45–46); when Jesus asked him how to feed the five thousand, his practical arithmetic response highlighted the human impossibility of the miracle (John 6:5–7); and he relayed the request of inquiring Greeks to Jesus (John 12:21–22). His question at the Last Supper—'Lord, show us the Father'—prompted Jesus's important teaching that 'whoever has seen me has seen the Father' (John 14:8–9). He should not be confused with Philip the Evangelist (Acts 6, 8), one of the Seven Deacons, who baptized the Ethiopian eunuch.
