Quirinius was the governor of Syria when a census was taken, as mentioned in Luke's Gospel.

Quirinius (Publius Sulpicius Quirinius) was the Roman legate of Syria under whose governorship a census was taken, mentioned in Luke's account of Jesus's birth (Luke 2:2). The historical reconciliation of this census with the reign of Herod the Great has been one of the most discussed questions in New Testament chronology, generating a large scholarly literature on the dating and nature of Roman census procedures in Judaea. Quirinius is independently attested in Josephus and Roman inscriptions.
