Old Testament

Zuriel was the leader of the Merarite Levites during the wilderness wanderings.

Zuriel, son of Abihail, was the leader of the Merarite Levitical clan during the wilderness wanderings and was responsible for the Merarite division of the camp, located on the north side of the tabernacle (Numbers 3:35). The Merarites were responsible for the heavier structural elements of the tabernacle — the frames, crossbars, posts, and bases — which they transported by oxcart. Zuriel appears only in this organizational context and is not mentioned elsewhere in the biblical narrative.
