1 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul around 55 AD from Ephesus during his third missionary journey. Paul had founded the church in Corinth during his second journey (Acts 18). He wrote to address numerous problems reported to him — divisions, immorality, lawsuits, and confusion about spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians contains 16 chapters addressing practical issues in the Corinthian church: divisions and wisdom (chapters 1-4), sexual immorality (chapters 5-6), marriage (chapter 7), food offered to idols (chapters 8-10), worship practices (chapters 11-14), the resurrection (chapter 15), and the collection for Jerusalem (chapter 16).

The main theme of 1 Corinthians is the application of the gospel to everyday church life. Paul addresses a church that was spiritually gifted but morally compromised. The cross of Christ — foolishness to the world but the power of God (1:18) — provides the lens through which every practical issue is resolved.

Key teachings include: the foolishness of the cross as God's wisdom (chapters 1-2), the church as God's temple (3:16-17), Christian freedom and its limits (chapters 8-10), the Lord's Supper (11:17-34), spiritual gifts and their proper use (chapters 12-14), the 'love chapter' (chapter 13), and the resurrection of the dead — 'if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile' (15:14-17).

1 Corinthians provides the earliest written account of the Lord's Supper (11:23-26) and the resurrection appearances (15:3-8), predating the Gospels. The love chapter (13) is the most widely read passage at weddings. Chapter 15 is the Bible's most extensive treatment of resurrection theology. The book shows how gospel truth transforms every area of practical Christian life.
