Study Note

God warns Solomon that if Israel forsakes the covenant, the magnificent Temple will become a byword: 'at this house, which is high, every one that passes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss.' The hissing (shereqah) was an ancient expression of shocked contempt at something fallen from greatness — the very height of the Temple's glory makes its desolation the more shocking. The prophetic-historical trajectory of this warning was realized in the Babylonian destruction of 587 BCE, which Lamentations (2:15-16) describes in strikingly similar terms: 'all who pass by clap their hands at you.' The theological principle — that covenant violation desolates the most sacred spaces — is also implicit in Jesus' cleansing of the Temple and his prediction of its destruction in Matthew 24:2.
