At Bethel, fleeing his brother Esau's anger, Jacob receives a renewed covenant promise accompanied by an explicit assurance of divine accompaniment: 'I am with you.' The specificity of the promise — watch over you wherever you go, bring you back to this land, not leave you — makes it one of the most personal divine pledges in Genesis. The scene at the ladder (or stairway) connecting heaven and earth has been interpreted as a cosmic axis, a temple image, and in the New Testament (John 1:51) as a figure for Christ. The verse is foundational for the biblical theology of divine presence accompanying the displaced and the vulnerable.
