Study Note

'Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus' — the 'therefore' (oun) draws the practical conclusion from Hebrews 7–10's elaborate argument about Christ's high priesthood: the theological argument issues in a liturgical and relational permission. The word 'confidence' (parrēsia, boldness, freedom of speech) was a political term in Athenian democracy for the citizen's right to speak freely before the assembly — applied here to the believer's right of approach to the divine throne. The 'new and living way through the curtain' (verse 20), identified with Christ's flesh, interprets the tearing of the Temple veil at the crucifixion (Matthew 27:51) as the inauguration of direct access to God's presence. The verse launches Hebrews' climactic paraenetic triad (10:19–25): draw near (verse 22), hold fast (verse 23), stir up one another (verse 24–25) — the practical implications of the priestly Christology.
