The opening of Hebrews 12 — 'since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us' — weaves the exemplary catalog of faith in chapter 11 into a sustained athletic metaphor for Christian life. 'Cloud of witnesses' (nephos marturon) has sometimes been read as the faithful watching the living run; more precisely, the heroes of faith themselves bear witness by their lives to the trustworthiness of God and the worthiness of endurance. The race metaphor (agon) was familiar from the Greek athletic games and was already in use in Pauline paraenesis (1 Corinthians 9:24-27; Philippians 3:14). The verse has become the canonical text for understanding the church as a community constituted across time by the shared experience of faith and perseverance.
