Study Note

The call for a 'new song' (shir chadash) to the Lord at the opening of the first Servant Song's sequel (42:10–17) invokes the tradition of Psalms 96 and 98, which also call for new songs in response to YHWH's marvellous acts. The universal scope of those summoned — those who go down to the sea, the islands, the coastlands — signals that the 'new thing' YHWH is doing (42:9; 43:19) exceeds Israel's national boundaries and demands a cosmopolitan chorus of praise. Revelation 5:9 and 14:3 deploy new-song language for the eschatological worship of the Lamb, and 15:3 specifically calls it 'the song of Moses and the Lamb,' fusing the Exodus and new-exodus traditions in a final liturgical synthesis. The verse has been important for Christian hymnody's understanding of praise as a response to historically specific divine action.
