Study Note

'But you have eyes and heart only for your dishonest gain, for shedding innocent blood, and for practicing oppression and violence' — the oracle against Jehoiakim (22:13–19) contrasts his corvée labor and palace-building with his father Josiah's justice and care for the poor (verse 16: 'he judged the cause of the poor and needy; is not this to know me? says the LORD'). The phrase 'eyes and heart only for' (ei-neka al) describes the cognitive and volitional narrowing of a person whose entire orientation has been captured by greed — a theological description of idolatry in its economic form. Jeremiah's charge connects knowledge of God to the practice of justice: Josiah 'knew' God because he defended the poor; Jehoiakim did not know God because he exploited them. The verse is an important text for any theology of justice that insists on the inseparability of right doctrine and right practice.
