Jeremiah 8:2

KJV

And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

Study Note

The punishment decreed for those who worshipped the sun, moon, and host of heaven is that their bones will be spread before those very celestial objects — a macabre reversal in which the worshipped become the audience for the worshipper's degradation. This lex talionis of idolatry (you loved them; they will witness your disgrace) reflects the prophetic conviction that false devotion ultimately humiliates its adherents. The 'host of heaven' cult is attested in 2 Kings 23:5 among the syncretistic practices that Josiah's reform tried to eliminate, showing Jeremiah's oracles have a precise historical referent. Paul's teaching that idolaters are 'given over' to the very passions they cultivate (Romans 1:24-28) echoes this logic of divine ironic retribution.

And they will put them out before the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, whose lovers and servants they have been, after whom they have gone, to whom they have made prayers, and to whom they have given worship: they will not be put together or placed in the earth; they will be waste on the face of the earth.
