Study Note

Jesus's diagnosis that 'every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved' presents unbelief not primarily as intellectual failure but as moral evasion. The light-darkness dualism of John's gospel (1:5; 8:12; 12:46) is both cosmological and ethical: light exposes what darkness conceals, and those whose works cannot bear exposure have a structural motivation to avoid the light. The verse is theologically significant for understanding the 'hardening of heart' theme: rejection of Jesus is not arbitrary but the logical product of a pattern of concealment-requiring behaviour that cannot tolerate transparent moral scrutiny. Romans 1:18's 'suppress the truth in unrighteousness' and John 9's progressive hardening of the Pharisees as they confront increasing evidence both develop this theme of chosen moral blindness.
