Study Note

Jesus's command 'do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you' reorients the crowd's understanding of the feeding miracle away from material provision toward the eucharistic discourse that follows. The paradox — Jesus commands effort ('work') but then identifies the food as something 'given' by the Son of Man — is resolved by verse 29: the 'work of God' is believing. The Bread of Life discourse (John 6:22-58) is one of the most contested passages in John for its eucharistic interpretation: does it refer primarily to faith or to the Eucharist? Most scholars see a deliberate polysemy. The verse echoes Isaiah 55:2 ('spend your labor not for what does not satisfy') in applying the contrast between perishable and lasting food to the spiritual realm.
