Study Note

In a striking inversion, Jesus warns his disciples not to fear those who can kill the body but to fear 'him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.' The word 'Gehenna' (translated 'hell') referred originally to the Valley of Hinnom south of Jerusalem, associated with child sacrifice under Ahaz and Manasseh, later becoming a symbol of divine judgment. The verse radically relativizes earthly power — the most a human persecutor can do is end physical life — and reorients the disciples' fear toward the eternal. This teaching shaped early Christian martyrology, sustaining those who faced death rather than apostasy.
