Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Study Note
The angels' hymn 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased' articulates the cosmic and earthly dimensions of the Incarnation's significance simultaneously. The structure — heavenly glory responding to earthly peace — reverses the usual direction: the Incarnation brings the divine into the human sphere, and the result is a new relation of peace (eirēnē, Hebrew shalom) between God and humanity. The phrase 'good will toward men' (eudokia — textual variants affect whether this is objective or subjective genitive) may mean 'among people of his good will' (those chosen by God) or 'peace resulting from God's good will.' The Gloria in Excelsis of Christian liturgy draws directly from this verse and has anchored the church's doxological response to the nativity for two millennia.
