Amoz, the father of the prophet Isaiah.

Amoz was the father of the prophet Isaiah of Jerusalem, mentioned in the opening superscription of the book of Isaiah and in 2 Kings 19:2, 20; 20:1 and 2 Chronicles 26:22; 32:20, 32 (Isaiah 1:1). Rabbinic tradition sometimes identified Amoz as a brother of King Amaziah of Judah, which would have made Isaiah a member of the royal family—a tradition that would account for Isaiah's seemingly easy access to the royal court. The name Amoz means 'strong' or 'courageous.' Amoz himself is otherwise unknown and plays no role in any narrative, being remembered solely as the father of one of the greatest Hebrew prophets.
