Ananiah

Old Testament

Ananiah made repairs to a section of the wall near his house during the rebuilding of Jerusalem under Nehemiah's leadership.

Ananiah was a man who repaired a section of the Jerusalem wall near his own house during Nehemiah's reconstruction project (Nehemiah 3:23). Nehemiah's account assigns specific sections of the wall to individual workers or families, and the detail that Ananiah worked 'near his house' reflects the practical incentive of defending one's own property. Nehemiah 3 provides a uniquely detailed record of civic participation in the restoration of Jerusalem's defenses. Ananiah also appears as the name of a settlement in Judah resettled by Benjaminites after the exile (Nehemiah 11:32), suggesting the name had geographic as well as personal usage.
