New Testament

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and played a significant role in the early church.

Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter and, like him, a fisherman from Bethsaida. He was originally a disciple of John the Baptist, and the Gospel of John records him as one of the first to encounter Jesus, immediately bringing his brother Simon to Jesus with the announcement 'We have found the Messiah' (John 1:40–42). Listed among the Twelve in all four Gospels, he plays a minor but notable role in feeding the five thousand, where he presents the boy with five loaves and two fish (John 6:8–9), and in bringing inquiring Greeks to Jesus (John 12:20–22). Tradition associates his later mission with Greece, Asia Minor, and Scythia, and holds that he was martyred on an X-shaped cross—the 'St. Andrew's Cross'—which has been adopted as the national symbol of Scotland.
