Caleb

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Judah · H3612H
Old Testament

Caleb (Chelubai), the son of Hezron, was a descendant of Judah and the father of Hur.

Caleb son of Jephunneh was a leader of the tribe of Judah who, along with Joshua, gave a faithful minority report when the twelve spies returned from scouting Canaan (Numbers 13–14). While the other ten spies spread fear about powerful Canaanite inhabitants, Caleb urged immediate conquest, trusting in God's promise. Because of his 'wholly followed the Lord' faithfulness, God swore that he alone among that wilderness generation (besides Joshua) would enter the Promised Land (Numbers 14:24). At eighty-five years of age he claimed the hill country of Hebron as his inheritance, declaring himself still as strong as the day Moses sent him out (Joshua 14:6–15). His bold faith makes him a model of persevering trust across generations.
