Ephlal was the son of Zabad, who was a descendant of Judah through Jerahmeel.

Ephlal was a man of the tribe of Judah from the Jerahmeelite branch of Caleb's lineage, recorded in 1 Chronicles 2:37 as the son of Zabad and the father of Obed. He belongs to the genealogical chain that traces Judah's secondary families during the Divided Monarchy period. His place in the Jerahmeelite register preserves his memory as a link in the ancestral chain of one of Judah's important clans.
