Gilead

Divided Kingdom Tribe of Gad · H1568J
Old Testament

Gilead, a descendant of Manasseh, was the son of Michael and the father of Jaroah, as recorded in the genealogy of the tribe of Gad.

Gilead was the son of Machir son of Manasseh, whose descendants occupied the Transjordanian territory that bore his name (Numbers 26:29–30; 1 Chronicles 2:21). He is also connected in 1 Chronicles 5:14 to a Gadite clan chief in the Transjordan region during the Divided Monarchy. The land of Gilead, east of the Jordan River, was celebrated for its balm (Jeremiah 8:22) and fertile pastures, and the regional name Gilead preserves this ancestor's memory across much of the Old Testament.
