Old Testament

Keilah, a town in the Shephelah of Judah, was rescued by David from Philistine attack but later threatened to betray him to Saul (Joshua 15:44; 1 Samuel 23).

Keilah was a town in the Shephelah of Judah that David delivered from a Philistine raid early in his outlaw years (1 Samuel 23:1–13). After David rescued the city, however, God revealed through the ephod that the inhabitants would betray him to Saul, prompting David's departure. The incident reveals both David's readiness to defend Israelite towns and his reliance on divine guidance. Keilah is later identified in 1 Chronicles 4:19 as a clan name in Judah, and Nehemiah 3:17–18 associates it with post-exilic builders.
