Lemuel, a king whose wise sayings are recorded in Proverbs 31, as taught by his mother.
Lemuel was a king whose mother taught him the wisdom sayings preserved in Proverbs 31:1–9, warning him against women who destroy kings and wine that perverts justice, and urging him to 'speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.' His identity has been much debated: some ancient traditions identified him with Solomon, while others associated him with an Arabian ruler named Massa (cf. Proverbs 30:1). The passage is notable for preserving the voice of a royal mother as a source of wisdom for governance.
