Luke, a physician and companion of Paul, was the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts.
Luke was a physician and companion of Paul, identified by Paul as 'the beloved physician' (Colossians 4:14) and one of his few associates remaining with him during his final Roman imprisonment (2 Timothy 4:11). By the late second century he was universally recognized as the author of the two-volume work Luke–Acts, which together constitute more than a quarter of the New Testament in length. His Gospel is notable for its literary elegance, special attention to prayer, the Holy Spirit, women, the poor, and social outcasts. Acts traces the expansion of the church from Jerusalem to Rome, with vivid 'we passages' (Acts 16, 20, 27–28) indicating the author's own presence. He is the only non-Jewish author in the New Testament, and his Gospel is often called 'the most beautiful book ever written' (Ernest Renan).
