Tamar
Tamar was David's daughter who was raped by her half-brother Amnon, leading to tragic consequences.
Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah who secured her legal rights as a widow through a daring act of disguise. When Judah's two elder sons Er and Onan both died without giving her a child, Judah withheld his third son Shelah from fulfilling the levirate duty (Genesis 38:11). Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute, lay with Judah himself, and retained his signet, cord, and staff as a pledge. When confronted with evidence of the pregnancy, Judah acknowledged: 'She is more righteous than I' (Genesis 38:26). She bore twins—Perez and Zerah—through this union; Perez is an ancestor of David and appears in Jesus's genealogy in Matthew 1:3. Tamar's story is remarkable for its sympathetic portrayal of a woman who acts boldly to claim justice within a patriarchal system.
