Study Note
The risen Christ's declaration that 'I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts' applies Jeremiah 17:10 and Psalm 7:9's imagery of God searching the innermost self to Christ — one of Revelation's clearest claims of Christ's deity. The message to Thyatira warns against tolerating 'that woman Jezebel' who teaches immorality, and the heart-searching declaration insists that the risen Christ sees what external appearances conceal. The phrase 'give unto every one of you according to your works' applies the judgment principle of Psalm 62:12 and Proverbs 24:12 to the congregational context.
