'For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness' — the analysis of Israel's failure in Romans 10:1–4 identifies the root error as a misunderstanding about the nature and source of the righteousness that constitutes covenant standing. The phrase 'God's righteousness' (dikaiosynē theou) is one of the most theologically contested phrases in Paul — interpreted variously as God's own attribute of justice, God's covenant faithfulness, or the right standing God bestows as gift.
