Jesus's answer to why he teaches in parables — 'To you it has been given to know the secrets (mysteria) of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given' — distinguishes between insider and outsider responses to the kingdom proclamation. The Greek mysterion (secret, mystery) is used by Paul for the previously hidden plan now revealed in Christ (Romans 16:25; Ephesians 3:3-9), suggesting continuity between the Synoptic and Pauline uses of the term. The verse raises the theological problem of divine election and human responsibility: why have some been 'given' understanding while others have not? The following citation of Isaiah 6:9-10 (verse 14-15) locates the problem in the hardness of heart that precedes the parabolic teaching. The parable form itself is revelatory and concealing simultaneously, a vehicle of grace for seekers and judgment for the indifferent.
