Study Note

Study Note

The concluding verse of Psalm 105 — 'that they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the Lord' — provides the teleological answer to the question of why God performed all the mighty acts of the exodus: the goal of redemption is covenant obedience. The psalm narrates Israel's history from Abraham to Canaan as a succession of divine faithfulness to covenant promises, without any mention of Israel's failures (contrast Psalm 106 which rehearses the same history with emphasis on unfaithfulness). The final verse integrates indicative and imperative: the story of grace produces a community formed for grateful, willing Torah-keeping. This law-gospel-obedience structure anticipates Paul's argument in Romans 3-8 that justification by faith is the foundation for Spirit-enabled fulfillment of Torah's righteous requirements (8:4).
