David's opening cry 'O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is' makes the desert geography of the superscription a symbol of spiritual longing rather than mere circumstantial complaint. The possessive 'my God' ('eli attah') is the fundamental covenantal declaration — the appropriation of the divine relationship as personal — while 'early will I seek' (shahar) connotes dawn-seeking, the devotion that begins before the day makes its demands. Augustine's 'our heart is restless until it repose in Thee' is the Western theological tradition's most famous commentary on this psalm's thirst metaphor. John 4:14 ('the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life') and Revelation 21:6 ('I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely') provide the christological resolution to this Davidic thirst.
